SJA New Year's Day Special 2007 - Invasion of the Bane

A Guide to Classic Who references (and other references) in The Sarah Jane Adventure episodes.

The Sarah Jane Adventures: New Year's Day Special 2007 (Story 1):  Sarah Jane Smith and her new friends discover that soft drink is bad for you.

Warning: May contain Spoilers for

"Invasion of the Bane"

Viewing Order

  • Doctor Who 02-03 - "School Reunion(Suggested viewing - reintroduction of character.)

[1ST] -  The first appearance of things in Doctor Who or related series.
[NEW] - Things that first appeared previously in the new Doctor Who series.
[TW] - Things that first appeared in the Torchwood series.
[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series (or the film.)  Episode List.

  • [OLD] "I saw amazing things out there in space" - Obviously a reference to her time with the Third and Fourth Doctor.

    • [OLD] Sarah Jane Smith - The title character and as noted above, companion to the Third and Fourth Doctors.  Really, do I need to explain this bit?

    • [TW]  Star Poet - The Arcateenians (aka Arcans) from Arcateen V, were previously seen in Torchwood where they weren't always as benevolent.

    • [1ST]  Moving Crystal - Although there is a previously appearing Crystalline races in Doctor Who (the Krotons from the Second Doctor story "The Krotons"), the exact name and nature of the one mentioned here is not yet given.

    • [1ST]  The Bane - First appearance of this alien race in any Doctor Who or spin-off.

    • [1ST]  Alien Detecting Watch - First appearance, although  the Third Doctor had a TARDIS finding watch and the Seventh one that detected danger.  The source of Sarah Jane's scanner watch isn't given on-screen, but other material states the Doctor left it inside K9 for her.

    • [1ST]  Sonic Lipstick - First appearance of Sarah Jane's Sonic Lipstick, obviously based on the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver.  Like the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver it doesn't work on Deadlock Seals.  The source of Sarah Jane's sonic lipstick isn't given on-screen, but other material states the Doctor left it inside K9 for her.

    • [OLD]  Residual Artron Energy - The Fifth Doctor stated that Artron Energy had something to do with the operation of the TARDIS, but didn't elaborate.

    • [1ST]  Mr Smith - First appearance of this computer.  The source and nature of it is not yet given.

    • [1ST]  Unknown Spray - First appearance, origin unknown.

    • [OLD]  Photo of the Brigadier - Sarah Jane and the Doctor regularly worked with Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart of UNIT.

    • [OLD]  Photo of herself with K9 mark III - Promotional photo for K9 & Company.

    • [OLD]  The TARDIS - The Doctor's transport, here in presumably historical drawings indicating Sarah Jane's research into the Doctor's adventures in Earth's past.

    • [OLD]  Secret Organisations - Presumably UNIT (old and new series) and Torchwood (new series) although neither acts very secretly.

    • [OLD]  Another photo of the Brigadier - Above comments still apply.

    • [OLD]  Photo of Harry Sullivan - Sarah Jane and the Fourth Doctor traveled with UNIT Medical Officer, Harry Sullivan, including in the episode "The Sontaran Experiment."

    • [OLD]  The Doctor - Obviously.  Once again, does this bit really need explanation?

    • [OLD]  K9 - See K9.  This is K9 Mark IV, given to Sarah Jane at the end of "School Reunion."  That he's been fixing CERN's mess for 18 months puts this episode at least that long after that episode.  K9's appearances are limited due to him being licensed to for the non-BBC K9 series.

    • [OLD]  Alistair, Harry - Obviously the Brig and Harry Sullivan (previously mentioned above as photos on her attic wall.)
