DW 09-08: The Zygon Inversion (Part 2)

A Guide to Classic Who references in new Who.

Doctor Who series 9 episode 8 - The Doctor continues to face the fall out from the peace treaty from the Fiftieth Anniversay Special ("Day of the Doctor.") and Part 1 of this story "The Zygon Invasion."

References

[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series (or the film.)  Episode List.

For context, the following are also covered:
[1ST] -  The first appearance of things in Doctor Who series.
[NEW] - Things that first appeared previously in the new series.

Ongoing References...

  • [OLD] UNIT - A paramilitary force, set up after the invasion of the London Underground by robot Yeti controlled by the Great Intelligence.  Called United Nations Intelligence Taskforce in the classic series and initially in the new series of Doctor Who until the real world UN complained.  It is now called the UNified Intelligence Taskforce.
  • [NEW] Sonic Sunglasses - A sonic device that replaced the Doctor's famed Sonic Screwdriver and first appeared in "The Magician's Apprentice."

  • [OLD] Twelve times if necessary - A reference to the number of times a Time Lord can regenerate.  [See the Doctor's Regenerations]

  • [NEW]  Psychic Paper - Used by the Doctor as fake ID, first appeared in the new Who episode "The End of the World."  It was used as a way to contact the Doctor in "New Earth."  At least one employee at Torchwood One was trained to recognise it as psychic paper in "Army of Ghosts."  The Doctor noted in "The Shakespeare Code" that William Shakespeare's ability to not see anything on the psychic paper proved he was a genius.

  • [OLD]  The TARDIS - The Doctor's time and space travel vechicle.  TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.  Like a lot of Time Lord technology it is "bigger on the inside."  The Doctor stole his Tardis when fleeing Gallifrey.  It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location and the chamleon circuit - designed to make the Tardis appear inconspicuous in any surroundings it appears has failed so it always appears as a police telephone box from 1960s England.   It is often implied to have a personality, which was given form in "The Doctor's Wife" and previously disliked Clara (who later entered the Doctor's time scar) and refused to visit Tranzelor (which had the Doctor's time scar and also had a future version of the TARDIS).  Osgood mentions hearing a couple of versions, possibly refering to the use of "Dimensions"/"Dimension."  In Season 1's "An Unearthly Child" the Doctor's granddaughter Susan claimed to have invented the name, but later other Time Lords use it (although some call it a TT Capsule.)

From the Anniversary Special...

  • [NEW] Osgood - A UNIT scientist, who first appeared in "Day of the Doctor."  A participant in the peace treaty, she was the only who knew which version of herself was human and which was Zygon.  She was killed in "Death in Heaven."  She may be a relative of a classic era UNIT scientist Tom Osgood.  In "Day of the Doctor" she wore a scarf resembling the Fourth Doctor's.

  • [NEW] The Black Archive - A top secret UNIT archive which previously appeared in "Day of the Doctor."

  • [NEW]  A very important day for me - It was, of course, the day he didn't destroy Gallifrey (the War Doctor), the day he married Queen Elisabeth I (the Tenth Doctor) and the day he discovered that he hadn't destroyed Gallifrey after all (the Eleventh Doctor) all in "Day of the Doctor."  Of course, that episode was first broadcast of the Fifthieth Anniversary of Doctor Who, so it's mainly a reference to that.

  • [NEW]  A bigger war than you will ever know - The Time War whiich occured between the original and new series and parts of which were shown in "The Last Day" and "Day of the Doctor."

From the Part 1...

  • [NEW]  The picture of the First Doctor - As seen in the previous episode.  Turns out there's a safe behind it.

  • [NEW] Sullivan's gas - When the gas was mentioned in Part 1 it was heavily hinted that former companion Harry Sullivan worked on it, and it is seemingly confirmed here.

This episode...

  • [OLD] Five rounds rapid - A reference to Kate's father, the Brigadier who gave the order in Season 8's "The Daemons" and a number of other times.  The line is so iconic that it is used on TV tropes to name the cliche of uselessly firing upon an unstoppable foe and is the title of Nicholas Courtney (the actor who played the Brigadier)'s autobiography.

  • [NEW] Mire helmet - The Black Archive contains a helmet from the alien race who appeared in "The Girl Who Died."

  • [OLD]  Cyberman helmet - The Black Archive contains a helmet from a Cyberman. [See Foes: Cybermen.]  It appears to be a new series pre-"Nightmare in Silver" Cyberman.

  • [OLD]  UNIT surveillance - Pictures of various companions, members of UNIT and the Doctor on boards in the Black Archive.

  • [OLD] Osgood's costume - Once again, Osgood is dressing as the Doctor.  The new one appearing to be dressed as the Seventh Doctor today.

The Time Crash blog was created to help New Who fans understand Classic Who references - and to know if something isn't a reference but a new idea.  If there's a reference I missed or a subject that you feel needs more explaining, please comment.
