A special short for "Children in Need," a charity run by the BBC (Donate here):  Occurs during the final moments of "Last of the Timelords" after Martha left but before the TARDIS collides with the Titanic.  One of the many extras associated with the new series of Doctor Who.

References

[NEW] - Things that first appeared previously in the new series.
[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series (or the film.)  Episode List.

Ongoing References...

  • [OLD]  The TARDIS - The Doctor's time and space travel vechicle.  TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.  Like a lot of Time Lord technology it is "bigger on the inside."  The Doctor stole his Tardis when fleeing Gallifrey.  It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location and the chamleon circuit - designed to make the Tardis appear inconspicuous in any surroundings it appears has failed so it always appears as a police telephone box from 1960s England.

  • [OLD] The Master - The long term enemy of the Doctor.  See Foes: The Master.  The earliest two Masters we saw both had beards.

From this minisode...

  • [OLD] Multiple Doctor stories - There were three in the classic series "The Three Doctors" (Season 10), "The Five Doctors" (25th Anniversary Special) and "The Two Doctors" (Season 22).

  • [OLD] Celery - The Fifth Doctor added celery to his costume during his first full story "Castrovalva" (Season 19) and replaced at a party in "Enlightenment" (Season 20).  The Doctor claimed to have an allergy to gases in the "Praxis range" and celery would turn purple when it exposed to those gases.

  • [OLD] Desktop Theme - The console room was a small, white or light coloured sparsely furnished room with roundels on the walls during the entire run of the classic series, including the Fifth and Seventh Doctor's run.  It wasn't until the 1996 movie, that the Seventh Doctor's console room appeared as more like a large cluttered library.

  • [OLD] Hands free - The Fifth Doctor had a sonic screwdriver for his first four stories, until it was destroyed in "Visitation" (Season 19).  It was later noted he had not replaced it.  The sonic wasn't seen again until the Seventh Doctor's final appearance in the 1996 movie.

  • [NEW] LINDA - The London Investigation 'N' Detection Agency were the badly named group of the Doctor groupies who appeared in "Love & Monsters."

  • [OLD]  The cloister bell - A TARDIS warning which sounds when the TARDIS, the universe or both are in danger.  In the previous episode it sounded when the ghosts changed the shift from day to night leading the Doctor to blame ghosts.

  • [OLD] Nyssa & Tegan - Nyssa and Tegan joined the Fourth Doctor and Adric in Season 18's "Logopolis" (Although Nyssa had appeared earlier in "The Keeper of Trakken" (Season ...)) and Adric, Nyssa and Tegan were with the Doctor when he regenerated into the Fifth Doctor.  After Adric's death in "Earthshock" (Season 19) Nyssa and Tegan were the Doctor's only companions until Turlough joined in "Mawdryn Undead" (Season 20) with Nyssa leaving in the next story ("Terminus" (Season 20)).  The Tenth Doctor makes the assumption that the Fifth comes from somewhere in this period.

  • [OLD] Cybermen[See Foes: Cybermen]  The Cyberman appeared in "Earthshock" (where as noted above, the TARDIS crew became just the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan.) [Cybermen do appear in "The Five Doctors" but the Fifth Doctor doesn't meet them.]

  • [OLD] Mara - The Mara appeared in two Fifth Doctor stories, "Kinda" (Season 19) and "Snakedance" (Season 20.)  "Kinda" was occured when Adric was still alive (although Nyssa only had a small role).  "Snakedance" was the story before "Mawdryn Undead" and thus the last story in which the crew is just the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan.

  • [OLD] Time Lords in funny hats - The Fifth Doctor had two stories featuring the Time Lords "Arc of Infinity" (the episode before "Snakedance" and so one of the final of the Nyssa, Tegan & the Doctor era) and "The Five Doctors" which was set after Nyssa and Tegan had both left the TARDIS.  The funny hats began with the Fourth Doctor and haven't really gone away.

  • [OLD] Old & Grumpy & Important - Peter Davison who played the Fourth Doctor was 29 when he took the role, younger even than David Tennant and significantly younger than the previous Doctors, especially the First.

The Time Crash blog was created to help New Who fans understand Classic Who references - and to know if something isn't a reference but a new idea.  If there's a reference I missed or a subject that you feel needs more explaining, please comment.
