References

[OLD] - Things that first appeared in the classic series (or the film.)  Episode List.

For context, the following are also covered:
[1ST] -  The first appearance of things in Doctor Who series.
[NEW] - Things that first appeared previously in the new series.

Ongoing References...

  • [NEW] Sonic Sunglasses - A sonic device that replaced the Doctor's famed Sonic Screwdriver and first appeared in "The Magician's Apprentice."

  • [OLD]  Gallifrey - Homeworld of the Time Lords.  During the Time War Rassilon attempted to move it outside of the Time Lock on the war, but at the expense of Earth.  He was stopped by the Fourth Doctor and the Master ("The End of Time" Part 1 & 2).  Soon after the a version of the Doctor from between the Eighth and Ninth Doctors moved it outside of timespace but thought he'd destroyed it. ("Day of the Doctor")  They later used cracks in the universe to attempt to contact the Doctor and eventually give him a new set of regenerations ("Time of the Doctor.")

  • [NEW]  The Time War - Events between the 1996 movie and "Rose" which reduced the role of Gallifrey and (temporarily) the Daleks in the new series.

  • [OLD]  The TARDIS - The Doctor's time and space travel vechicle.  TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space.  Like a lot of Time Lord technology it is "bigger on the inside."  The Doctor stole his Tardis when fleeing Gallifrey.  It is an older model ("Type 40") and unreliable, often ending up in the wrong location and the chamleon circuit - designed to make the Tardis appear inconspicuous in any surroundings it appears has failed so it always appears as a police telephone box from 1960s England.   It is often implied to have a personality, which was given form in "The Doctor's Wife" and previously disliked Clara (who later entered the Doctor's time scar) and refused to visit Tranzelor (which had the Doctor's time scar and also had a future version of the TARDIS).  In Season 1's "An Unearthly Child" the Doctor's granddaughter Susan claimed to have invented the name, but later other Time Lords use it (although some call it a TT Capsule.)

  • [OLD]  Daleks - Popular villains from the time they appear in the First Doctor's second story (Season 1) and throughout the original series (see Foes: Daleks).  Thought destroyed during the Time War but at least two survived: the Metalron from "Dalek" and the Dalek Emperor from "Bad Wolf"/"The Parting of the Ways" who recreated the Dalek race using human DNA.  Another group of Daleks who had been captured by the Timelords, imprisoned and cast into the Void managed to escape in "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday."

  • [OLD]  Sonic Screwdriver - A sonic device first used by the Second Doctor, and used in various forms until early in the life of the Fifth Doctor.  The Seventh had one near the end of his life and one was used by successive Doctors.  The current, Twelfth, Doctor had one gave it to young Davros in "The Magician's Apprentice" and his been using Sonic Sunglasses ever since.  Now Clara has the Sonic Sunglasses, the TARDIS has given the Doctor a new Sonic Screwdriver.

From Part 1 & 2...

  • [NEW] The Confession Dial - First appeared in he prologue to "The Magician's Apprentise," as an important but unnamed disc of unknown purpose.  The Doctor gave it to the Sisterhood of Karn and told them they knew who to deliver it to.  It was said to be the Doctor's will (of sorts) to be delivered to his best friend (Missy) on the day before he died.  It is said that it would not open until he died.  Ashildr/Me took it off the Doctor in "Face the Raven" and he turned out he was trapped in it in "Heaven Sent."

  • [NEW] A hybrid - Accordimg to "The Witch's Familiar" there is a prophecy of a hybrid between two warrior races.  Davros speculated that the Doctor fled Gallifrey because of his role in the creation of the hybrid.

  • [NEW]  Me/Ashildr - A recurring character from this series of Doctor Who.

This episode...

  • [NEW] I think it's called "Clara" - It's obviously Clara's leitmotif from the score, usually listed as "Clara's Theme (The Impossible Girl)" on the soundtrack albums.

  • [NEW] The barn - appears to be the same building the Doctor visited in "Day of the Doctor" to activate the Moment and that he would sleep in when a child (as visited by Clara in "Listen.")

  • [1ST] The Cloister - First appearance of this location.  The TARDIS does contain location called the Cloister Room though.  In "Logopolis" (Season 18) it contained the Cloister Bell and in the 1996 movie it contained the Eye of Harmony.  The Cloister Bells on individual TARDISes sound when it or the unverse is in danger.

  • [1ST]  President Rassilon - An important figure in Time Lord history, and architect and engineer, sometimes considered the first Time Lord according to "The Deadly Assassin" (Season 14) Rassilon led the battle agains the Great Vampires according to "State of Decay (Seaon 18) and was rumoured to know the secret of immortality, but trapped any of those who sort it in his tomb (The Five Doctors).  During the Time War he returned from the dead (possibly the source of his "the Resurrected" title in this episode and bacame Lord High President.  He was responisble for the Time Lord's attempts to break Gallifrey out of the Time Lock.  His appearance had changed suggesting a regeneration.  Or being President really ages you.

  • [1ST]  Sliders/Cloister Wraths - First appearance of these Time Lord dead.

  • [OLD] The Sisterhood of Karn - First appeared in the Fourth Doctor story "The Brain of Morbius" (Season 13).  The Sisterhood of Karn were protectors of The Sacred Flame which produced the Elixer of Life (which they share with the Time Lords).  They believed that the Time Lords were the only race that matched their mind power.  The Sisterhood briefly brought the Eighth Doctor back from the dead and gave him an elixer which would bring on his regeneration in the "The Day of the Doctor" prequel "The Night of the Doctor"  and the prologue to this episode.

  • [NEW] Ohila - First appeared in the "The Day of the Doctor" prequel "The Night of the Doctor" and the prologue to this episode.  She was named in reference to Ohica from the Fourth Doctor story "The Brain of Morbius" (Season 13).

  • [NEW]  Doctor of War - A new name for the War Doctor, the incarnation of the Doctor between the Eighth and Ninth Doctor.

  • [1ST]  Skull Moon - Presumably part of the Time War.

  • [NEW]  "How Many Regenerations Did We Give You?" - A reference to the new cycle given to the Doctor in "Time of the Doctor."  In "Kill the Moon" the Doctor suggested it may be infinite.

  • [OLD]  Immortals - The Elixer of Life extends the life of those who drink it, particularly the Sisterhood of Karn.

  • [OLD]  The Matrix  A Gallifreyan VR and appeared in "The Deadly Assassin" (Fourth Doctor - Season 14), "Arc of Infinity" (Fifth Doctor - Season  20) and "The Ultimate Foe" (Sixth Doctor - Season 23), a part of it in most of Series 8, especially "Death in Heaven."  The Matrix was explained to the Doctor by Coordinator Engin in "The Deadly Assassin":
THE DOCTOR What's that?
ENGIN: The APC control.
THE DOCTOR: APC?
ENGIN: Amplified Panatropic Computations.
THE DOCTOR: Brain cells.
ENGIN: Yes. Trillions of electrochemical cells in a continuous matrix. The cells are the repository of departed Time Lords. At the moment of death, an electrical scan is made of the brain pattern and these millions of impulses are immediately transferred to the
THE DOCTOR: Shush. I understand the theory. What's the function?
ENGIN: Well, to monitor life in the Capitol. We use all this combined knowledge and experience to predict future developments.

  • [OLD] Web of Time - In "Attack of the Cybermen" (Season 22) Lytton said that the destruction of Mondas was part of the Web of Time, and that the destruction of Earth at that point (1986) would damage it.

  • [1ST]  Extraction Chamber - First mention of this device.

  • [OLD]  Lord President - The leader of the Time Lords, a role the Fourth Doctor took on to avoid trial in "The Deadly Assassin." (Season 14)   In "The Five Doctors. " the Fifth was asked to stay and fill that role, but fled.  The Sixth Doctor, when put on trial, was told he's been removed from the position because he abandoned it.

  • [1ST]  Neural Block - First appearance of this device.

  • [NEW]  Cloister Wars - Missy made reference to this in "The Magician's Apprentice." Presumably the Daleks were involved.

  • [NEW]  Weeping Angels - Recurring villains who first appeared in "Blink."  Rassilon refered to them as the "Weeping Angels of old" in "The End of Time."

  • [OLD]  Shobogans - (also spelt Shabogans) a group who commit acts of vandalism, variously described a juvenile delinquents, rebels or an sub-group of the Outsiders in other material, but only mention in "The Deadly Assassin" (Season 14) in which Spandrell, Castellan of the Chancellery Guard, when the Doctor asked him to test a weapon by firing it at a symbol on the wall called it: "Just the kind of hooliganism we're always running the Shabogans in for."

  • [NEW]  Four knocks - The drumbeat of the Master  and the knock Wilf made are important set of four knocks.

  • [OLD]  "Reversed the Polarity" - A phrase commonly used by the Third Doctor, and as a reference to the Third Doctor.

  • [OLD]  Ice Warrior - A monster from the original series.  One appeared on a submarine in the episode "Cold War."

  • [NEW] A mummy on the Orient Express - It's difficult to tell, but it could be a reference to the episode "Mummy on the Orient Express."

  • [NEW]  Amy & Rory - Companions to the Eleventh Doctor.  They met up with the Doctor in a cafe that looked like this one in "The Impossible Astronaut."  But just them there was no other person.
